They say history repeats itself. Let’s all stand up and cheer for this one! Why all the rejoicing? I can’t wait to be the one to tell you that: “Design” is back!
What do I mean? Let’s back pedal for a minute. For quite some time we have all been walking through the desert of what has already come to be known as “the grey period” of design. A period that has reflected simplicity, deconstructed color palettes and vast amounts of neutrals, stacked on top of even more neutrals that are layered with yet more neutrals, and maybe a “pop of color” (as it has come to be known). It only makes sense that so many people have easily submerged themselves into this neutral lifestyle trend. Amid our ever changing, extremely busy, loud and demanding world, simplistic design really does lend itself to a kind of overall calm and balance. In some cases, however, these spaces can often end up registering as being too sterile of an environment and lacking comfort both visually and functionally.
However, there is now a tangible, purposeful shift that is happening in the design world and it is beginning to trickle into every subcategory of design. We are talking about a resurgence of everything color, pattern and texture. Bold colors, warm colors, stained woods of various species, wallpapers, marvelous accessories in conjunction with both large and fine scaled prints sprinkled together with decadent textures and materials... (are you ready for this part?) in the same room. These elements are the kinds of puzzle pieces that reflect deeper personality and character in a room. They embrace specific recognizable styles and motifs of historical relevance AND reverence. Consumers really have been making a comeback into craving roomscapes that emit familiarity, emotion, recognizable classic quality and in some cases tradition. What we are now stepping into will be a period of truly beautiful and endless home design opportunities. And with timeless patterns and textures now re-imagined in fashion forward terms of endless appeal, it’s a GREAT time to be unapologetic about allowing your home to be a special place suited just for you.
The very best part? Anyone and everyone will be able to adapt into this exciting upcoming design landscape, including those consumers who already have a neutral based starting point. Not only will anyone be able to elevate their rooms, but they will be able to do it to any degree that they see fit for themselves personally. It is far from adopting a trend, but rather bending timeless styles. Because really, that’s what a space really should be. We will witness that these rooms and spaces moving forward will all be very different from one another, once again achieving individual style and preferences that are meaningful and positively delightful.
